Anxious heads wrangle over RAE
Article Abstract:
Vice-chancellors have said that plans to simplify research funding in the UK have caused a serious rift in the government, with the Treasury and Department of Trade and Industry supporting a move to metrics while the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) id defending the RAE. The DfES has said that a working group is being set up to produce proposals on use of metrics in research assessment.

Sussex PhDs in search of utopia seek wealthy allies

Sussex University PhD students have set up the Sussex Centre for the Individual Society (SCIS) research centre after becoming disillusioned. The SCIS will be based at the Sussex campus but is independent of the university and will raise its own funding.
