Architecture students threaten lawsuit
Article Abstract:
De Montfort University could face legal action from up to 240 architecture students following the Architecture Registration Board's (ARB) withdrawal of professional accreditation for a number of the university's architecture courses as a result of low standards. The ARB withdrew accreditation from De Montfort's full-time graduate diploma, three-year BA in architecture and its part-time BA in February 2003 following a review that found that students were gaining degrees despite failing essential elements of the courses and that standards were "unacceptable". The withdrawal of the accreditation has hit 80 students this year - a number of whom have already met with lawyers and are preparing a group legal case - and, as it could take three years for the university to regain accreditation, a total of around 240 students are likely to be affected.

Ex-students reject UKPd5k Oxford Brookes offer
Article Abstract:
Twenty-nine former Oxford Brookes University students have rejected ex gratia payments of as much as UKPd5,000/person to drop compensation claims brought as a result of the university's repeated failure to gain professional accreditation for its osteopathy degree course. The "with-out an admission of liability" payments had been offered to 37 students who enrolled on the course in 1998 and 1999 only to find that they had to undertake up to 17 months' additional study on top of their degree courses in order to qualify as professional practitioners. Only eight students are understood to have taken up the offer.
