Arts postdocs lead the pack in job stakes
Article Abstract:
Postdoctoral researchers working in the humanities and social sciences fields in the United Kingdom are twice as likely as those working in the biological and physical sciences sectors to be offered permanent positions by their universities, according to a report on staffing trends produced for the Higher Education Funding Council for England. Ian Haines, president of the UK Deans of Science, expressed concern at the report's findings as it showed that a large number of researchers working in he sciences remained on non-permanent contracts.

Too bad, 'good girl'
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the higher education sector in the UK and how, despite the increasing feminisation of culture, women are still not being helped to succeed. It is contended that this is partly because women still fall in to the pattern of behaving like the "good girl" - getting all their work done on time, responding positively to authority - whereas it is those who exhibit abilities outside these areas that are traditionally more likely to advance quickly within the higher education sector.
