Bristol leads culture change

Bristol University is the leading university in the United Kingdom when it comes to putting its research-only staff on permanent contracts, with 50% of such staff now on a permanent contract. Bristol is far ahead of other universities in this respect, with the second and third placed institutions in the table, the universities of Bath and the West of England, only employing 29% of the research assistants and postdoctoral researchers on permanent contracts.

Casual culture props up academe

Almost half of people working in the higher education sector in the UK are employed on a casual basis, despite government initiatives designed to create greater job security, according to 'The Unequal Academy' report from the Association of University Teachers.
