Astute critic or just a philistine caricature?
Article Abstract:
Vilayanur Ramachandran, a neurologist, discusses his love of art and his use of neuroscience to develop 'universal laws' of art in the light of the publication of his book "The Emerging Mind: The BBC Reith Lectures 2003". Ramachandran's work has been criticised by many within the art world, with some noting that he has not properly established the parameters for the set of things recognised as legitimate 'art'. Ramachandran concedes that his framework relates more to aesthetics rather than art, and that "laws of aesthetics" would be a better term for his theories.

A profile of Malise Ruthven, managing editor of The Journal of Consciousness Studies, and his fascination with Islam and fundamentalism in the light of the publication in April 2004 of his book "Fundamentalism: The Search for Meaning". Ruthven aims to illuminate the dangers that we face in a world where denial of pluralism becomes a recipe for conflict, but he remains hopeful about the long-term outcome of the conflict between the numerous fundamentalist groups around the world.

Mistress of the mind
Article Abstract:
Susan Blackmore, TV pundit and author, discusses the joy of writing a textbook on consciousness in the light of the launch of her latest book, Consciousness: An Introduction, on 30 May 2003. Blackmore claims that far from being dull, writing a textbook on consciousness was a challenge, an honour and a joy, and that no scholar wanting to understand consciousness could do better than pen the first textbook on the subject.
