Article Abstract:
A survey of undergraduates has revealed a particularly high level of dissatisfaction with university accommodation among students at Plymouth University. Students complained about paying high rents for tiny rooms. In contrast, students at Lancaster University felt that they paid very little for university accommodation, although standards varied widely. Students at the wealthy Cambridge colleges are luckier than those at the poorer colleges. Not only can they can 'live in' for the full three years but rooms are often cheaper than at the poorer colleges because the income is needed less.

Cash fears dominate clearing

University admissions officers dealing with students applying for places through clearing in 1998 will be expected to answer queries about the new system of student finance. Institutions have adopted a range of approaches to communicate information about tuition fees and loans. Huddersfield University has established a financial hotline linking students directly with finance officers while Leeds University has produced a tabloid paper, Money Matters, for distribution to schools and prospective students. Other universities have organised funding briefings for admissions staff.

Article Abstract:
A survey of the first intake of undergraduates who have had to pay the 1,000 pound sterling tuition fee reveals a remarkable consensus about the structure of courses and the standard of lecturing. Students at Lancaster University felt that their lecturers were good, as did their counterparts at Plymouth University. Students at Strathcylde University supported the idea of teaching qualifications for all new lecturers despite agreeing that the standard of lecturing was good. They were also concerned about the large number of postgraduate students with lecturing duties.
