The naked and the damned
Article Abstract:
There is a long history in the UK of legal battles over the borderline between art and obscenity. Existing legislation is based on inconsistent assumptions and is outdated. It originated in the context of the reprographic technologies of the mid-19th century, and is therefore not suitable for dealing with modern art forms such as electronically generated images. It is now time to look closely at the function of obscenity law and to consider what changes may be needed to align it with the cultural complexities of the modern age.

'Publish and be damned if I pay.' (controversy in United Kingdom over academic journals charging to publish research papers)(Research)
Article Abstract:
There is considerable controversy in the UK about the fact that some academic journals charge to publish research papers. This is not really a problem in the US, where research awards generally contain an element to cover page charges. However, it can present difficulties for academics in the UK, who may have to avoid publishing in certain journals. They point out that some learned societies manage to publish journals inexpensively to society members and libraries without making page charges.
