Balancing acts and loose ends
Article Abstract:
The quality of higher education will be a major issue for the incoming UK government following the May 1997 general election. The Quality Agency began operating in April 1997 and will be required to manage the potential conflict between academic autonomy and accountability while focusing on the increasingly important issue of standards. A new quality process should commence in October 1998 which could include self-assessment, which will also have to be managed by the Quality Agency. The connection between funding and quality could also prove a controversial issue.

Maggie Excuse was just 'bunk'
Article Abstract:
Protestations by Sir Edward Heath that he was never the warmest admirer of Margaret Thatcher, claims that have often been dismissed as pique, have been given substance with the release under the 30-year rule of official documents by the Public Record Office. The documents reveal Heath's exasperation with Thatcher's efforts to reform radical student unions while she was secretary of state for education and science.
