In sight and out of mind
Article Abstract:
In the 19th century those with acute mental problems were placed in long-term care in hospitals but current moves are to close these hospitals and care for these people in the community, with social and health workers overseeing arrangements. Many of these professionals are uneasy about this, especially in view of the increase in longevity and medical successes, and believe many of these people would be better served by remaining in institutional care. The Nuffield Provincial Hospitals Trust has founded two chairs of community care studies at Glasgow and Leicester Universities, providing 1.5 million pounds sterling over eight years.

College lecturers should be more aware of mental illness in their students. They should also be more confident about dealing with students who approach them with fears concerning their mental health. A survey of student medical services revealed that over 15% of students using the services had mental health problems, and a Leicester University survey revealed that 54% of students approach personal tutors when seeking help. The Leicester University survey showed that common problems included financial worries, lack of confidence, depression and mood change management.

Human genetic engineering is a subject that causes considerable controversy. Scientists involved in this field point out that they are relatively inexperienced, they know a little about 4,000 genes and the human body is composed of 100,000 genes. Over one in twenty of the world population has suffered from some form of genetic disorder by the time they reach the age of 25. Some writers feel that positive use can be made of plant genetic engineering to improve living standards for the developing world, and ultimately for all.
