Old quacks and future nostrums
Article Abstract:
Historian of Medicine Roy Porter believes that people suffering from Aids should not be treated as harshly as those who had veneral disease at the beginning of the 20th century. Porter is unsure if the extensive use of Prozac in the USA will not lead to unforseen side-effects. He likens it to the use of opium in the 18th century. In 1980 Porter became a Professor of the social history of medicine at the Wellcome Institute which followed his work as Director of studies in history in Cambridge, England, during the 1970s.
