Beware falling rocks
Article Abstract:
Over 100 craters on the earth have been attributed to damage from asteroids or comets hitting the planet. Some scientists have suggested the impact of a very large comet led to the death of the dinosaurs. Whilst other scientists have suggested impacts from very large comets or asteroids have occurred periodically, at around every 26 million years. The research has been followed up by other scientists, with eight not confirming the data whilst five have agreed with the statistics. Extinctions of species on a very large scale have been found to have occurred six times.

Rocks, stuffed animals and the odd Turner
Article Abstract:
Many of the collections stored or displayed in universities are vulnerable in times of spending cuts. Universities are permitted to sell all or part of their collections to improve some part of the institution or provide for future student needs. Although some universities hold paintings in their collections the majority consist of scientific artefacts. There has been a call to investigate this situation by auditing all the material held in university collections, and increase government funding for them.

Geology on the rocks; are field trips too dangerous?
Article Abstract:
Undergraduate geology students are required to undertake six weeks of project work alone as part of their degree. This has been called into question on grounds of safety after students have died or been injured in remote mountainous areas. Students often are not trained in mountaineering and may be alone for up to eight hours on rocky terrain. Some geology students have been attacked or harassed while doing project work in dangerous areas.
