Soya beans are political hot potatoes
Article Abstract:
University College, London, England, Professor of Genetics Steve Jones is unhappy how the scientific world and the UK government have handled the debate over genetically modified (GM) foods. He suggests the public may be concerned about GM foods because of the rate of change in the modern world. He points out GM foods may be necessary to ensure we have sufficient food in the future. Although Jones does admit he is worried genes from crops could be transferred to other species. Jones tried unsuccessfully to discuss his views on GM foods with a group of environmentalists.

Making an exhibition of oneself
Article Abstract:
The National Gallery in London, England, is exhibiting 70 self-portraits by Rembrandt. This exhibition covers most of his self-portraits, including the very well-known one from Kenwood House. Many of his self-portraits do not seem to be about him at all. Instead, they are investigations of the representation of various abstract emotions. The use of shadows across the brow is a common 'motif' in Rembrandt's self-portraits, but is not seen in his portraits of others.
