Big wheels of justice
Article Abstract:
Academics are increasingly called on to be expert witnesses in the UK. This may involve writing reports rather than appearing in court. They have to be able to write in clear English and not all academics are able to do this. Computer experts are prone to writing badly, according to one solicitor. Training courses are available to prepare academics for appearing in court. Witnesses can feel that they are being tried and have to prepare for tricks that could be played on them.

Article Abstract:
Researchers have had difficulty in gaining access to university archives. There may be restrictions on access lasting 80 or even 100 years in the case of personal records. Material donated to archives may be more easily accessible if the donor agrees. Restrictions vary from one UK university to another, and some universities will provide information for people compiling family trees. Archivists are employed at some universities but they are not common in the UK.

Article Abstract:
The United Oxford and Cambridge University Club excludes women from being full members so they are unable to use the club's library. They can be associate members and eat at the club. College heads from the universities have protested, but the club has not changed its rules. Any male who holds a degree from either Oxford of Cambridge University can join the club. There are almost 25,000 books in the library and there are 43 bedrooms for members.
