Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the success of distance and e-learning in the Americas are examined in the light of Columbia University's decision in March 2003 to cut its losses on its Fathom.com online education portal project. It is argued that while high-profile ventures, such as Fathom, have wound up as casualties of a downsizing of the e-learning market, smaller, lower-key ventures are quietly managing to succeed in the online education market by applying a more measured appraisal of its use and employing hard-won insights into its place alongside more traditional learning experiences.

Article Abstract:
Roger Schanck, e-guru and chief education officer at Carnegie Mellon West, believes that e-learning is, for the most part, oversold and uninteresting, adding that the sector was more interesting five to six years ago than it is now. Schanck argues that when developing e-learning projects, educational institutes should not just copy the classroom, they should use it creatively to shake up the curriculum and the students, using it to dispense with the in-house teaching of subjects that they are weak in and allowing them to focus on what they are good at.

Article Abstract:
A physicist who has taught a number of online courses for the University of the Virgin Islands from his home in France argues that distance learning has much to offer lecturers and students, but it remains underexploited. It is acknowledged that asynchronous distance-learning can be a time-consuming job for the lecturer, but it is contended that in the current teaching environment, where students and lecturers have a greater number of external pressures than ever before, it is a valuable and underused method of teaching.
