Article Abstract:
An overview of the potential impact that the Freedom of Information Act, which is due to come into effect in the UK from 01 January 2005, will have, with specific attention to its impact on academics and academic institutions. Academics are advised to get some training about the Act, to get their files in order and to find out who in their institution is responsible for complying with the Act.

Fear over IP proposals
Article Abstract:
Fears have been raised at Cambridge University about the implications of planned new intellectual property proposals. It is claimed that the proposals would result in academics having to ask the university's authorities for permission to make money from their ideas, giving the university a level of control over the side activities, such as publishing and inventing, of most academics.

Issues relating to the monopoly that the Privy Council holds over whether or not an institution of higher learning in the United Kingdom can call itself an university are examined from the point of view that the Privy Council is an arcane and archaic body and that there should be an alternative body with the ability to confer this title.
