Industry tie no road to riches

Richard Lambert, the man charged with running the government's review of business-university collaboration in the United Kingdom, has warned that many universities in the UK are being overambitious about the amount of revenue they will be able to generate through innovation activities and business links. The Lambert commission revealed that there is a difference between the ways universities and business want any collaboration to operate and that medium-sized companies appear to have little contact with universities.

David Norwood is a chess grandmaster and chief executive officer of the intellectual property investment and development company IP2IPO. His move into the intellectual property sphere was triggered by his realisation that universities in the UK were failing to capitalise on the intellectual property they generated. His stated main aim is to help make the UK the world's leading centre for science and technology.
