Bursting bubbles of lofty repute
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to public reputation and the impact that single errors can make on reputation are examined from the viewpoint that errors are not always significantly damaging to the reputation of an individual, and that often errors are important as they provide others with a target on which they can focus the aim of their intellectual process. Examples used of single instances overshadowing a career include Hugh Trevor-Roper, one time regius professor of history at the University of Oxford, who authenticated the forged Hitler Diaries, and Bill Buckner, a professional baseball player who cost his team the 1986 Baseball World Series when he allowed a ball to roll through his legs, thereby continuing the Red Sox inability to win the World Series since 1918.

An appetite for pastry... and power
Article Abstract:
Helmut Kohl is extremely successful as Germany's chancellor and is expected to continue in this role until at least 1998 because no obvious successor has been found. His success in politics has been attributed to his party management and interpersonal skills. Kohl is also described as ruthless when he is crossed or threatened by other politicians. His strong regional accent is advantageous, because German people can easily relate to him.

Canada awry
Article Abstract:
In Oct 1992 Canadians will go to the polls to vote whether Quebec, the largely French-speaking province, should secede from the rest of Canada. Quebec may take action itself if it dislikes the outcome of the vote. It sees itself as a powerful entity in its own right and the rest of Canada as poorer by comparison.
