Springboks pick up research pace
Article Abstract:
Research and development (R&D) in South Africa is undergoing a renaissance, with increased government spending spurring innovation. South Africa's R&D expenditure amounted to some $1 billion in 1996, according to the Foundation for Research Development's senior science and technology policy analyst William Blankley. Figures from a Unesco report on research spending in South Africa show that 52.7% of all research is conducted by the private sector, 31.2% by the state, and 16% by other institutions.

Weak behind the mask
Article Abstract:
Germany has experienced many problems since reunification, including racial tension and problems in the Exchange Rate Mechanism. The country is now perceived by some to be too big and politically demanding, while the costs of reunification have significantly weakened the German, and European economies. Others argue that political power in Germany is too diffuse for Germany to rule Europe, and that its relationship with France will determine EC outcomes.
