Campus comrades in arms
Article Abstract:
The number of independent universities in St. Petersburg, Russia, is expanding rapidly. There were 26 private universities in the city in January 1997, with St. Petersburg reportedly accounting for 9% of all the independent universities in Russia. Some academics claim St. Petersburg has retained its focus on research and the pure sciences and aims to produce a scientific elite. Many private universities employ state sector teachers, with the two sectors preferring to complement eachother without competition.

Red tide floods campus
Article Abstract:
Communism is becoming more popular with Russian university teachers because many blame the lack of financial support and research on the free market economy imposed by Yeltsin in 1993. Some of the 600 university professionals do not wish to advertise their communist support because they are concerned about adverse career prospects. Some members of Moscow State University have supported the Communist Party throughout their careers, although many more have joined in recent years.

Call for steps to protect Russian
Article Abstract:
The decline in the number of Russian speakers calls for immediate steps to protect and promote the Russian language. Reduced international prestige for the language and Russia's fast declining population are believed to be the causes of the decline. However, Russian is considered to be gaining through tourism, since it is widely spoken in Tunisia and Greece, which are not traditionally Russian targets.
