Campuses adapt to overseas influx

Continued expansion of the number of overseas students being recruited by universities in the UK is forcing universities to re-examine campus culture and rethink their student financial support arrangements. According to Clive Saville, chief executive of the UK Council for Overseas Student Affairs, institutions are undertaking broad strategic changes to take account of the increasing internationalisation of their student profiles. The number of overseas students accepted by UK universities rose by 19.6% in 2002, vs 2001, according to figures from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service.

Just as members of Parliament are looking into the troubled education sector, college leaders have begun to question the Learning and Skill Council (LSC) and its leadership. The Association of Colleges has said that the LSC has been a poor successor to the Further Education Funding Council, and in some cases may be compounding problems. Many believe that, if the LSC tries to run all aspects of colleges with typical bureacratic style, then it will be a resounding failure.

Article Abstract:
It has been predicted that the UK government will scrap the current requirement that universities must have a minimum of 4,000 students, thereby opening the way for private businesses to call themselves universities. The prediction has raised fears that the international reputation of UK universities could be diluted and that higher education in the UK could fall victim to McDonaldisation.
