Jury out on bid to fix university teaching
Article Abstract:
The UK Higher Education Funding Council has introduced a new initiative to increase the status of teaching in universities where it is often seen as inferior to academic research. The Teaching Quality Enhancement Fund will oversee the funding. They plan to set up 24 specialist centres to support teaching in specific subjects. Some money will be given to outstanding teachers in the form of awards, worth about 50,000 pounds sterling. Each institution will be given a share of the fund which is worth 90 million pounds sterling over three years.

Threat to college sub degrees
Article Abstract:
UK vice chancellors have argued against the provision of higher education degrees by further education colleges. Many UK colleges argue that providing these degrees is necessary for their financial position. There is uncertainty over funding of such degrees. Many further education colleges have made an investment in providing degrees and as they attract student grants, the colleges do not want to abandon their plans. Student counselling can be superior in further education colleges, though funding levels are low.
