Can teaching centres work?
Article Abstract:
Higher education funding councils have proposed a 30 million pounds sterling scheme aimed at creating specialist subject centres for university teaching. Some supporters believe the scheme must receive appropriate funding and recognition in order to succeed. Others claim the plan will fail because pedagogic research is not recognized by the research assessment exercise (RAE). Some department heads are concerned that use of the subject centres will deter staff from RAE work, which is perceived as more important.
