Can we build an urban utopia?
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the argument that the city should be a sphere of active democratic participation are examined from the point of view that in order to achieve this, the huge wave of privatisation that is currently underway must be rolled back. It is argued that in cities, rights that have become derivative, such as the right to be treated with dignity, should be made into fundamental rights, while rights that are currently fundamental, such as the profit rate and private property, should become derivative.

Follow Dearing who dares
Article Abstract:
Ron Dearing has carried out a study of qualifications for 16-year-olds to 18-year-olds in the UK. He has sought to achieve a consensus in his proposals for reform, but the result is a complex system which will not lead to a great improvement in coherence and transparency. There is a need for a more normative focus to education in the UK, with a compulsory study of a wide range of subjects, if the UK educational system is to achieve the standards of France.

Who dares turn their nose up at Mrs Dalloway?
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the divide that has developed over the reputation of Virginia Woolf between literary critics in the United Kingdom, where many critics refuse to accord her classic status, charging her with being snobbish and elitist, and the United States, where she seems to be almost universally adored, are examined in the light of the success of the film "The Hours".
