Career breaks hit selection for RAE
Article Abstract:
Women are underrepresented in the research assessment exercise (RAE) as too few female academics have research records which are good enough to be included, according to a study by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. The underrepresentation of women is due to inequalities in higher education, including the failure to take into account effects of maternity leave on research careers.

UCU: We failed our members

The University and College Union (UCU) has jeopardised its future industrial strength by failing to protect members taking part in the recent disputes. In an internal policy paper, Sally Hunt, joint UCU general secretary, says hundreds of lecturers taking part in the marking boycott suffered 'enormous' pay deductions without the support which members expect from the union.

Staff ignore cheating
Article Abstract:
A paper presented at the second international plagiarism con ference in Gateshead has revealed that only 27 percent of staff in one Napier University school made 'efforts to report plagiarism'. Many tutors are unwilling to tackle plagiarism, despite a major anti-plagiarism action plan.
