'Political' issues, not old affiliations, will decide result

Candidates in the impending elections for the University and College Union (UCU) positions believe that voting patterns of members would be based on 'political grounds' rather than 'tribalism' and affiliations to former unions. Experiences of academics in different parts of the sector might impact their opinions on key issues such as handling of the 2006 pay dispute, resulting in voting across former union lines.

Sports is ahead of field

The fastest growing field for jobs in higher education are sport science and leisure studies, according to figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency. Sport science and leisure studies saw a 19 percent increase in full-time academic staff from 2003-04 to 2004-05, followed by design and creative arts with a 9.2 percent increase.
