Article Abstract:
University of Colorado's David Monarchi has developed a distance education project using virtual reality. Students also use virtual reality on campus to supplement more traditional teaching methods. The course is seen as especially useful for journalism students who have to respond to virtual events. Monarchi used software that was off-the-shelf, and sometimes free, in order to control costs. Some critics from within the university claim that his approach involves entertainment, but Monarchi argues that learning should involve enjoyment.

Academic attack on library cuts
Article Abstract:
Over 400 academics from the US have protested over additional reductions in spending on university libraries. There is concern that these cuts could reduce the number of academic publications that have university libraries as their main market. The number of copies of academic papers that are sold has been reduced, while the porportion of univerisity libraries that cannot afford to purchase all academic papers has increased. This problem has affected large, well-known universities as well as smaller establishments.
