Citation circus ignites explosion
Article Abstract:
Analysts estimate that 2,000 new research journals appear each year. One response to this increase in publishing has been the use of computer analysis to produce league tables of the most frequently cited authors and publications. This analysis is useful for some purposes but it can also be misleading. Some disciplines use citations more than others, assessors may judge the academic worth of an article according to the ranking of the journal in which it appeared, and US journals may receive a ranking higher than they merit because US authors tend to cite their compatriots.

Nuclear Acord
Article Abstract:
Seattle, WA-born artist James Acord declares that he is simply a sculptor, despite being the only individual licensed to work with nuclear materials. He suggests that it is logical, perhaps even inevitable, for a sculptor living in the nuclear age to work with radioactive materials. Acord will take up a position as an artist in residence at the physics department of Imperial College, London, England, in Sep. 1998. He is confident that he can make safe the technetium with which he will be working, having studied nuclear physics at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in the US.

Professor of furniture Bill Cotton actively seeks to retrieve and restore working-class family furniture, believing it can provide valuable information on working-class economic and family life. He admires the skills and ingenious craftsmanship of the makers of the simple vernacular furniture and he is interested to note the regional pecularities which reflect historical economic disparities. Many owners of such furniture are now holding on to it as a family heritage and are refusing to sell despite the growing value.
