Sir Ron's forgotten legion
Article Abstract:
The failure of Sir Ron Dearing's review of higher education to properly consider the role of postgraduate courses and the place of postgraduate students within higher education has left postgraduate students facing a bleak future. The burden of debt that students will face as a result of the introduction of tuition fees for undergraduate courses, together with the difficulty of obtaining funds for postgraduate study, may deter many from studying for a postgraduate degree. Dearing's proposals for the future funding of research are also likely to have an adverse effect on PhD students.

Time to push the reactive button
Article Abstract:
The poor public support for universities and colleges following the latest round of Government cuts in funding will only be improved by using sensational statements through the media, to attract attention. Schools, hospitals and nurseries manage to summons a lot of public support using this technique. Universities receive 30% less funding than they did ten years ago and staff-student ratios have decreased dramatically as a direct result, although public support has waned. The media appears to be the way to stimulate public opinion and cause a consequential Government reaction.
