Class size adds fuel to AUT fire over pay
Article Abstract:
Universities are becoming degree "production lines" with the ratio of students to staff in higher education worse than in schools, according to a new report produced by the Association of University Teachers. The report reveals that, over the past three decades the student-to staff ratio in higher education had increased from nine students/lecturer in the 1970s to 21 students/lecturer today. Class sizes in schools have been falling, with the average now being 18 students/teacher.

'I'm living on a knife edge, it's horrible'
Article Abstract:
Violence against staff by students at universities and colleges in the UK is on the rise, according to research done by The Times Higher Education Supplement. The research revealed 1,010 recorded cases over the past five years, and it is contended that this is likely to be much less than the true figure as 37 universities claimed to have recorded no cases during the period under investigation.
