Colleges gain role in 14-19 reform
Article Abstract:
Ministers and school and college heads have agreed that if the government's plans to reform 14-19 education and training in the UK are to succeed, then higher education must have a major say in their development. Mike Tomlinson, former Ofsted chief, currently heads up a group which has been charged with developing an unified qualifications framework which features baccalaureate-style qualifications at three levels. The baccalaureate-style system is part of the government's long term plans for education in the UK, in the short term the priority is to maintain stability and efficiency in the existing A-level qualifications system. By 2005 the aim is for new hybrid academic/applied GCSEs to be introduced, for modern apprenticeships to be improved and expanded, for the term vocational to be dropped from A-level and GCSE titles and for new partnerships to be formed between employers and educational establishments in order to create new study opportunities for young people.

'It is an odd reversal. Once, we mocked US schools for their multiple-choice tests and predigested answer plans, but now we insist on orthodoxy'
Article Abstract:
A comparison of the educational systems in the United Kingdom and United States. It is argued that while it may once have been true that the UK system produced a better educated standard of student, that is no longer the case and the US system is actually now at least as good if not better than the UK system.
