An analysis of people's obsessions with making lists of the greatest and best in the light of the publication by Prospect magazine of the top 100 public intellectuals. Frank Furedi, professor of sociology at the University of Kent in Canterbury, notes that lists are a convenient form of journalistic shorthand and a way to spark a debate.
