Concern for science
Article Abstract:
There is concern some scientists are been pressurized by politicians and commercial interests when writing about their research. Scientists carrying out work in laboratories which have been financially supported by the government have been asked to change their views. There have been instances where scientific publications have refused to print articles which they feel will offend members of the Royal Society for Science. If scientists are continuedly pressured in to changing the way they work to suit other interests their reputation for honesty will be damaged.

People's jury out on science
Article Abstract:
There is a lack of positive images relating to scientists in the United Kingdom, and this may be a reason why not enough people wish to study the subject. John Battle, UK science minister, aims to involve the public in debates on science and bring some democracy into policy decisions. A citizens' jury has assessed evidence on genetic engineering for manufacturing food, and has decided that consumers do not benefit, while risks are unknown. The jury does not oppose more research on this topic.

In a climate of change
Article Abstract:
Scientist James Lovelock discuses his work and how his independent stance has sometimes made him the focus of harsh criticism. His book 'Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth' was a particular source of anger for many other scientists. Lovelock is 81 years old.
