Confessions of an errant tipster
Article Abstract:
The reputation of the UK's psephologists was severely damaged by their failure to accurately predict a landslide victory for the Labour party in the recent general election. Their poor performance resulted from their lack of confidence in their own assessment of voter behaviour in the 1992-1997 parliament. They generally paid little attention to evidence which indicated a significant drop in support for the Conservative party following the departure of the UK from the Exchange Rate Mechanism in Sep 1992, and continued to believe that the Conservative party would enjoy a last minute revival in popularity.

An unloaded chamber
Article Abstract:
The UK House of Lords has been very supportive of the universities and higher education in the past. There is some concern the changes to the make up of the Lords will result in fewer challenges to the House of Commons over policies relating to higher education issues. The level of support from the House of Lords in the future will depend on who sits in the chamber. A Royal Commission is being chaired by Lord Wakeham to look into the composition of the House of Lords. The number of hereditary peers has already been cut from 759 to 92.
