Article Abstract:
Ways in which the endangered species of the river dolphin could be saved are presented. Particular attention is given to the need to understand the species' way of life and the causes of its disappearance. Research carried out in Brazil for rescuing the river dolphin is presented.

The BSE saga has reawakened interest into transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, and new research into prion proteins is yielding clues as to how these agents became pathogenic. Imbalances in copper are implicated in prion alterations which increase susceptibility to disease.
