Cleopatra needled
Article Abstract:
The Afrocentric theory that Egypt was the cradle of civilisation and that the ancient Greek philosophers learnt their ideas from the Egyptians has been attacked by Mary Lefkowitz, a classicist at Wellesley College, MA. One of Lefkowitz's targets, Martin Bernal, who teaches at Cornell and has detailed the way in which the Greeks borrowed from non-European cultures, points out that he does not believe that all things came from Africa. However he does believe that insufficient recognition has been given to the significant contribution made to world progress by people of African descent.

There is something in the water
Article Abstract:
Deadly sea-borne algal blooms are becoming a growing problem throughout the world, particularly in the US where they are killing huge volumes of shellfish and fish, causing ecological harm and causing human illness and deaths. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) could be causing up to $100 million a year of damage in the US, but their cause has not yet been identified. Some scientists believe pollution could be to blame, such as sea-dumped sewage or farm slurry dumped in waterways. Others believe the toxic blooms could be naturally-occurring bacteria.

Steeling beauty
Article Abstract:
Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski was the product of disrespect for authority which emerged in the 1960s, according to David Gelernter, one of Kaczynski's victims. He believes that this disrespect for authority destroyed a key element in society that has not yet been repaired. His experiences have served to confirm him as a humanist lover of literature and art. He has given particular attention to his thesis of machine beauty.
