Victims of justice
Article Abstract:
Sue Lees, professor of women's studies at the University of North London, England, argues that rape trials function as part of a legal system that was never designed to deal with modern relations between the sexes. She also points out that a large number of rapes reported to police stations fail to reach the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) while others are down-graded to sexual assault and then rejected by the CPS as unwinnable. Lees explains that one of the major things wrong with rape trials is the way in which stereotypes of female behaviour are used to colour the jury's perception of the victim.

Making the grade?
Article Abstract:
Some United Kingdom universities, which were built in the 1960s, are being recognized as listed buildings. They were constructed when the government, in the mid-1960s, gave some 100 million pounds sterling annually to the universities. Falmer House, Sussex University, Sussex, was designed by Basil Spence in 1960-61. Falmer House has been criticised as not being very comfortable to work in. It has been given Grade 1 listed status along with St Catherine's College, Oxford University, Oxford. St Catherine's was designed by Arne Jacobson in 1961-66.

Art cause needs a finer finish
Article Abstract:
Caroline Villers, who belongs to the London Courtauld Institute's department of conservation and technology, believes that UK conservation courses are threatened by lack of funding, and that there are not enough jobs in the sector because the government does not consider conservation a priority. Villers' department, which admits four students annually, does not charge for commercial work. The Hamilton Kerr Institute, Cambridge, which does charge for such work, and has an endowment, still needs to compete for grants for research.
