DTI caught in free-data row
Article Abstract:
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has, at the urging of big industry players, brought pressure on the UK's research councils to dilute plans to make research freely available online, it is claimed. Research Councils UK had been due to release a statement in November 2005 supporting "open-access publishing" and calling on researchers to deposit research papers in online publication banks, but this statement has been delayed, leading to the suggestions that the DTI intervened on behalf of publishing companies who perceived a threat to their profits.
