Dad's old school tie may be just the ticket
Article Abstract:
While the system of Ivy League universities in the United States is being put forward as a model for the higher education system in the United Kingdom to emulate, it is argued that in reality the US system is just as prone to hereditary elitism as the UK system. While Ivy League universities do put more effort into recruiting students from more disadvantaged backgrounds than their UK counterparts, the level to which they rely on the donations of alumni means that they are, to a certain degree, compelled to look more favourably on the offspring of donors than they might otherwise do.
