An analysis of the current size of America's ground forces is provided alongwith alternatives such as the draft to increase personnel. The occupation of Iraq by coalition forces has led to renewed attention on issues related to size and composition of American armed forces, which forces the American government to increase its troops.

Fear and folly: Learning from mistakes in Iraq
Article Abstract:
The Americans do not fully appreciate the way the stalemate in Iraq is affecting the U.S. reputation for military invincibility. The U.S. should hence behave in ways that suggest prudence and wisdom, and discard the notion that whatever happens in any part of the world somehow affects vital U.S. interests.
