Students shift alliances in multiracial poll
Article Abstract:
The results of student representative council elections held at South African universities in autumn 1996, reflect students' preoccupation with everyday issues such as campus crime. Numerous new groups emerged, notably independent candidates aligned to Christian and democratic groups, and a far greater number of students voted than in recent years. The South African Students Congress attracted just 12% of the vote at the University of Witwatersrand, compared with 43% for the non-aligned South African Liberal Students Assn. after five years of dominating student politics.
