Scots need to counter England's fees bonanza
Article Abstract:
The director of Universities Scotland argues that, in the light of the increased financing that universities in England will receive as a result of the Higher Education Act, the Scottish Executive needs to take steps to ensure that Scotland's higher education system maintains its competitive position. It is noted that while the Scottish system will not have the fees that English universities charge, Scottish universities will lose their attractiveness to students if they do not operate at the same standards as other universities.

...think top-up fees are irrelevant to the future of higher education
Article Abstract:
The emeritus professor of continuing education at the University of Durham analyses the current and future state of higher education in the United Kingdom. It is argued that the government's plans for variable university top-up fees are not relevant to the real problems that face higher education in the UK, and that what the leaders of higher education really lack are ideas about what higher education should mean in the 21st century.
