Drug specialist doubles value

A team of chemists from Oxford University looks set to pocket millions of pounds from spin-off company VASTox plc, which has doubled its value to UKPd58 million in less than one year. The company, which develops drugs to treat rare diseases, was started two years ago by six scientists from the chemistry department at Oxford who invested UKPd100,000 in the company. The company was floated in October 2004 and valued at UKPd30 million.

Transfers prove costly
Article Abstract:
Many university technology-transfer offices fail to cover their costs, according to an investigation by The Times Higher. At least ten offices responsible for exploiting the ideas of academics are spending over GBP 1 million more than they generate while a similar number make money or break even.

OU nets access funding windfall
Article Abstract:
The Higher Education Funding Council for England has announced that GBP 344 million will be allocated to help English universities to recruit students from poor backgrounds. The Open University will receive GBP 29 million in 2006, almost four times as much as any other university.
