Report slams imprudent leadership at Maori college
Article Abstract:
Te Wananga o Aotearoa, the most popular higher education institution in New Zealand, is riddled with practices unacceptable in a public organisation, according to a report produced by the Auditor-General. The institution, which was established to counter educational failure and unemployment in the Maori community, is guilty of bad record-keeping, unacceptable use of credit cards and travel, poor processes for spending and inadequate management of conflicts of interest, according to the report.

NZ reforms to ends cash-cow courses
Article Abstract:
New Zealand's government has sent a clear message to universities that it wants more of a say in deciding which courses it will fund. Tertiary Education minister Michael Cullen, said institutional autonomy and student choice will be maintained but said polytechnics and universities would have to negotiate multi-year funding plans linked to strategic national goals and quality assurance.

NZ universities seek distinction
Article Abstract:
Universities in New Zealand are holding talks with the Government and unions in the Universities Tripartite Forum with the hope of clearly differentiating themselves from the country's polytechnics. The universities contend that half of their academic workforce comes from overseas and, in order to remain internationally competitive, they need to be better funded.
