Durham's days of guns and roses
Article Abstract:
Durham's Miners's Gala reflects local economic change, which includes the decline of the mining industry and heavy industry in the region. While mining was dangerous, and much of heavy industry was linked to war, little has been put in its place. The region is now characterized by low paid work in the service sector, and temporary jobs and training schemes set up by the Government, which has little political incentive to aid the region. The future of Durham appears to lie in being a tourist attraction, selling its industrial past.
