Article Abstract:

The school-to-work summer challenge at Elizabethtown Community College, Kentucky, enrolls high school students in total quality management and interpersonal communication classes. They spend two months of summer vacation to learn college-level courses and to gain work experience with monetary rewards and lots of fun. They work for four hours per day in one of the five participating businesses. The students establish a set of rules in the program, which is monitored by a crew supervisor. Open house events and socials for high school students and their parents are also conducted.

Article Abstract:

The future of the vocational teacher education program at Rutgers University, NJ, seems uncertain as a result of the lack of federal and state support and the financial scandal in 1988. Professors Charles Doty and Annell Simcoe are the only remaining faculty of the Dept. of Vocational and Technical Education and both have been given administrative duties in the Graduate School of Education (GSE). There are concerns that closure of the program would eventually lead to a decline in the quality of vocational teachers for secondary-level courses in New Jersey.

Article Abstract:

Ronnie Houck, an 18-year-old boy at Southfork High School's Agritechnology Academy, FL, claims to have benefitted immensely from his tech prep course. The technical-vocational training is goal-oriented and the stress is on practical lessons. Houck sees infinite opportunities for himself as Stuart, FL has a large number of agricultural industries. His plans for the future include a degree from Indian River Plantation College and then from the University of Florida.
