Lights, camera learning...
Article Abstract:
Film Producer Stephen Bayly has taken over as Director of the UK National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, England. The school is supported by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport which supplied 2 million pounds sterling in 1998. Some 160 students attend the school but there are concerns new students will be deterred by fees of 3,500 pounds sterling for 1999. Bayly welcomes the Labour government's plans to give more funding to film production. He supports the use of new technology but feels less time should be spent on learning skills and more on developing new ideas.

Hard times for dismal science
Article Abstract:
Universities are finding it increasingly difficult to appoint British economists of a sufficiently high standard, with fewer British students undertaking doctoral economics degrees while the number of students taking economics at Advanced level is in continuous decline. The study of economics is increasingly focusing on theoretical modelling and technical analysis which are perceived as difficult to apply to real economic problems. Many of those who study economics are also keen to pursue employment within the financial services industry as opposed to an academic career.
