Experts to make online tuition less of a lottery
Article Abstract:
The Government has invited service providers to establish competing managed Internet services as part of its efforts to remove the technical and financial barriers that have deterred teachers from getting on the Internet. The related problem of lack of training is being tackled by making National Lottery money available for teacher education. Education suppliers, although committed to developing Internet services, would prefer to be contracted to work alongside approved national sites such as those developed by the National Council for Educational Technology and TeacherNet UK.

Collaboration strategies take edge off high IT anxieties
Article Abstract:
Office for Standards in Education inspectors have criticised the teaching and use of information technology (IT) in the great majority of British schools, prompting some to form alliances with traditional teacher training institutions. Sir James Barrie, a state primary school in Wandsworth, London, England, is involved in a collaborative IT programme with Project Miranda based at London University's Institute of Education. Multi-media in-service training programmes incorporating accredited courses at the Institute of Education have been established in three London boroughs.

Not just a load of old Tosh
Article Abstract:
Teachers in UK schools often have insufficient training in using computers. Toshiba is providing scholarships to help teachers train in computing. Teachers have been using modems to identify their training needs by experimenting a home. Productivity has improved since teachers do not have to work in the school building at set times. Teachers can write notes when needed when they are not constrained by having to use networked machines.
