Face it, the last thing we need is more scientists
Article Abstract:
British schools tend to focus on physical and natural science which many schoolchildren find boring and irrelevant. Science ethics, the history of science and scientific arguments would be more interesting and informative. The number of science graduates has decline but science based companies require only a few scientists whereas they need lawyers, financers and marketing specialists in greater numbers. The UK government's plans to reverse the falling number of prospective science graduates, by allowing them to enter university without fewer qualifications, has failed.

The Lady who turned to nationalisation
Article Abstract:
Margaret Thatcher, former UK Prime Minister, is blamed for the state of universities, which were centres of excellence before her government intervened. The policy of Thatcher on higher education was based on her dislike of left-wing local authorities and academics rather than her beliefs. In 1986, Kenneth Baker assumed the role of Education Secretary, publishing 'Meeting the Challenge', a white paper. His department believed that industry needed more technologists and scientists, but did not know who to satisfy demand.
