Farewell to the rule of thumb
Article Abstract:
Researchers at the University of Maryland are developing an expert system to help schools make effective use of student performance data obtained through Maryland's compulsory school testing programme. The tests, which are at the forefront of efforts to improve standards in schools, measure students' critical thinking through a variety of tasks. The innovative software system being developed at the University of Maryland will provide users with information tailored to their needs. The system will identify a school's particular strengths and weaknesses and recommend specific practices.

Is there really a problem of graduate 'over-education?' (United Kingdom)(Column)
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom does not necessarily have an excessive number of graduates, contrary to claims by the Confederation of British Industry. Graduates may not obtain graduate level jobs, according to surveys, although the definition of a graduate job is arbitrary. Graduates may do a non-graduate job more effectively because of their graduate skills, although some skills are consistently under-utilized. Thirty percent of those who graduated in 1980 failed to get a graduate level job by 1986, according to research.

Citizenship is not just cricket, teachers warn
Article Abstract:
Teacher trainers in the UK are unhappy with the ideas of good citizenship being expressed by the main political parties. The ruling Conservative party has called for the establishment of cadet corps in schools, while the opposition Labour party is planning for a millenium volunteer corps to help children become good citizens. However, teacher trainers say that lack of time and the difficulty in defining good citizenship mean that it will be hard to introduce it into the school curriculum.
