Fertile fields of study
Article Abstract:
The study of biology should involve field courses, but such courses are being reduced in the UK as a result of budgetary constraints. Field courses are labor intensive, and colleges are being forced to boost productivity. Students can learn enough to contribute something to biology without field courses, but field observations are often important in biology, and field studies are part of the excitement of being a biologist. Biology departments should seek to cater for the needs of all students, and this means providing field courses.
